World War II-era letter written by Wilbur Guy Hart to friends in Collierville. Transcription of letter: Wheeler, GA Nov.14, 1941 Dear Friends, I wish to thank you for the lovely box of candy. It sure is swell. I don't believe I have eaten any better home made candy. This army cooking is not so hot + I don't believe you could have sent me anything I would have enjoyed more. That old saying "The best way to a man's heart is through his stomach" really works here. [Illegible] are really kept busy down here. We get up at 5:45 A.M. + have breakfast at 6:00 oclock. After breakfast we clean up our barracks + at 7:30 we fall out ready to go to the drill field. We have an hour off for lunch + come in at 5:00 P.M. We stand retreat at 6:00 P.M. then have supper. That ends a days work most of the time unless there is something else to be done. I am to be here for 13 weeks basic training + then I will be sent to some regular army post. We complete 4 weeks of the training tomorrow. I hope everyone is getting along nicely, and hope to be with you Christmas. I sure [illegible] missed being at Church + Sunday School with [illegible]. I have, however been going to Sunday School + [illegible] in Macon. [Illegible] is about six miles from here. Their Church is a good bit larger than ours. I think their pastor is [illegible] + [illegible] a [illegible]. Thanking [illegible] + everyone one of you for [illegible] lovely gift. Sincerely yours, [Illegible] Hart |
